Phyllis Miller Lee
The sketches and ceramic figures are, for me, a form of note-taking and
narrative, a way of commenting on what I see and remembering it in a
certain way.
They are small. With a few exceptions, I prefer to paint small paintings, draw little sketches, and make small figures. Although they are based on drawings or people I see, they become, as I work on them, very real for me. I can imagine what they would express and how they might act. I think that everyone brings to their perception of a figure their own ideas, which is great, and sometimes, surprising.
If I had to choose my favorite period of art it would be the Italian Renaissance—Paolo Uccello, Fra Angelico, Piero della Francesca, and in the north, Pieter Brueghel.
